Book and other reviews – 2024
Every year I tend to read a good amount of books and listen to some audiobooks. I’ve always wanted to retain better memory of content I consume (including movies or shows) and these blog posts have been a great way to reinforce what I’ve gone through. These posts offer brief reviews, some thoughts or notable things from the works, and general impressions of the material. Beyond the memory benefits which come from writing these I think it is good to stop periodically after consuming new information and spend some time to think critically and assess the information or story.
I’ll update this post throughout the year as I finish books and things. I’d also love to get recommendations from anyone reading this or to hear your thoughts on any of the books listed. Please feel free to comment! Here are links for past book posts; last year I managed 35 (missing my target of ~50) and am hoping to increase that amount this year!
New entries will show up on the bottom of this page. PROBABLY SPOILERS BELOW!

Tropic of Cancer (Tropic, #1)
Miller, Henry | Fiction | 1934
I really wasn't a huge fan of this. I can imagine, for its time, the mix of edgyness, some of that post-WW1 disillusionment/antipathy/spirit, and the notion of the type of life lived in Paris, all mixed into an interesting story which talked about things generally taboo with language and ethos not normally present in literature at the time drew some appeal. I think the writing at time would be captivating but the overall subject matter and point of view were very hard for me to relate to or be interested in. I wouldn't read again and don't plan to look at the other books in the series but if you're into the rambly/stream-of-consciousness narrator and that post-WW1 vibe you'd probably enjoy it...I think?

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1)
Yancey, Rick | Sci-Fi | 2013
Not a fan. It is an okay sci-fi story with an interesting premise of the whittling down of the remainder of humanity. It had some nice mysterious moments and puzzling situations which were compelling to read more or try to speculate about the cause but the story itself wasn't something I felt the desire to keep reading. My biggest complaint was that I really didn't feel the characters had much substance to them, there was some nice 'survivor' mentality things and trying to blend some balance of self-preservation, uncertainty about who or when to trust in this dystopian situation, and occasional moments of hope and compassion but the characters felt flat. I probably would have enjoyed more in high-school or if I had read less sci-fi.

He Who Fights with Monsters (He Who Fights with Monsters, #1)
Shirtaloon | Fantasy/LitRPG | 2021
This is a many book series. This review will be the same for all of them and I will update if new books change my mind.
The TL;DR, really cool premise, fun twist on the fantasy world/trope where the hero isn't a great wizard or fighter but a sort of bloodmage/doom character but the main character is so cynical, cocky, unobservant, and just not appealing that it diminishes the rest of the world. The first few books I found the most interesting and there were some cool moments through the series but it falls victim to the power scaling issue so prominent in Fantasy/LitRPG/etc. As of the last book he's like an immortal multiversal god being coming into his powers. That said, a lot of fun moments. I would only recommend as an audiobook and it's good for driving between spots where you may only get a bit at a time and be frequently distracted.
